About Rain Sticks
The Rain Stick has been around for centuries in South American culture. Probably originating in Chili or Peru, it was used by healers for cleansing sessions, or played as a way to serenade the gods and bring welcomed rain.
Rain sticks were fashioned from a long, hollow cactus stem's which were filled with small beads or beans and then sealed. Thorns from the cactus were driven into the stem creating many small pins on the inside surface. When the stick is tilted, the beads fall across the pins making a sound similar to that of rain. The rain stick is often used to create an atmostpheric sound, or shaken as a percussion instrument.
Today young school children are sometimes taught how to make a rain stick from simple recycled items, like empty paper towel rolls and popcorn kernals.
