Topic: Intermittent cutting out when volume knobs adjusted while in iShred Li

Really noisy, too. If you do adjust volume knobs, it crackles considerably, and turning those knobs while playing is common to accentuate passages in real life, not just in iShred Live. All of my guitars exhibit this response, so I took one to my luthier yesterday, and just to be safe, he used DeOxit on all plugs and sockets to assure no sticky/noisy pots, and still it crackles. On close examination, his thoughts are that my guitar analog into the software digital, that when volume is adjusted, it is actually the signal that is altering, not the devices themselves. He has seen this before with other device combinations.
I'm not sure this works for me, and I have $29.95 for the cable, as well as several purchased effects invested. I'll play with it over the weekend and see if I can live with it or return it.
Also, when it works without the noise factor, this app rocks. I would like to get it worked out as opposed to credit and returns.
If you would like to discuss this over the phone or speak to my luthier, email me and I'll send my number or you can send me yours and I will be glad to speak to you.

Re: Intermittent cutting out when volume knobs adjusted while in iShred Li

It's about 7 hours later and here are further observations. First off, I think it is the cable, and will call Griffin tomorrow.

iPhone 3GS works fab with any headphones, ear buds, no problem, no static.

All 3 guitars hooked to any of 3 amps with standard cables, no problem no static.

iPhone with iShred on and Griffin cable not plugged in and live, major noise. That only happens with a straight guitar cable plugged to a regular guitar amp and live and thunked against your hand or ground if it is cheap.

Now in all fairness, to home in on the cable more as the problem link, I downloaded a competing iPhone App called Amplitude, and the same problem with Amplitude. I had originally tried both iShred Live and Amplitude, chose iShred Live as the better tool for me, and want to give it a full and fair chance.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

Re: Intermittent cutting out when volume knobs adjusted while in iShred Li

I have a question for you: Is this noise, which happens when you twist the  volume knob, the same when the "BuzzKill" is on as when it is off? I'm just wondering if the volume changes are triggering something in BuzzKill.

Re: Intermittent cutting out when volume knobs adjusted while in iShred Li

Thanks for writing Charlie.

BuzzKill really shows the volume changes as a low frequency range that only stops if you do not turn volume up or down on the guitar. iShreds horizontal vue meter also clips to red in BuzzKill as well as if no effects or add ons are used. BuzzKill does not affect the noise at all.

Griffin is on my call list for today.

Re: Intermittent cutting out when volume knobs adjusted while in iShred Li

Griffin Technology believes the cable is defective. I am returning it today.

Re: Intermittent cutting out when volume knobs adjusted while in iShred Li

I returned the Griffin cable and replaced it with a competing product, the iRig by IK Multimedia for use with it's free iTunes App, Amplitude, that also sells effect add-ons for their app. It works flawlessly, has a pre-amp and is what I had hoped Griffin's less expensive cable would achieve, but you get what you pay for.

I definitely like iShred Live, it's interface and pedal paradigm much better than Amplitude, though.

So, the net result, iShred Live as the software, and the iRig as the connecting cable. It sure works for me and I will recommend it as a combination. Several other musicians I showed iShred Live to at some live shows this last weekend, loved using your iPhone instead of dragging a small practice amp around for distraction free practice.

I'll add more on this little rascal as I put it through it's paces.

Thanks for the update. We will be interested to hear more from you as you spend more time with the app.

Re: Intermittent cutting out when volume knobs adjusted while in iShred Li

My pleasure, for sure.

First observation: The iShred Live/iRig set-up is absolutely quiet moving any and all controls on any of my 3 guitars:
-'77 les Paul w/ P-90s
-2002 SG w/ '57 Classic pickups
-recent Gretsch 5120 hollowbody w/double humbuckers

I really like the very short iRig as opposed to the longer Griffin cable. The more cable the more to go south. Plus, I know my cables/plugs and trust them. Griffins has too much that can, and will, go wrong sooner than later, again IMHO. Just call it a 61 year old guitar players limited experience...

The Buzz Kill now calibrates perfectly and is very effective just running scales so far.

Read up at IK Multimedia on why it seems iRig is the better connection, IMHO, here:

Q:
What happens if I connect my guitar to the iPhone/iPod/iPad without using the iRig adapter?

The iRig interface adapter is the best way to feed your guitar signal (or any other instrument's signal) into your iPhone/iPod/iPad.

iRig is not a passive lead, but an active preamp that is able to provide to the mic input on your mobile device the best possible sound in terms of quality and signal strength.

Using a simple passive adapter/cable (like 1/8'' inch adapters, 3-pin camera audio-video leads, etc..) will result in low level or distorted signal.

The actual iRig is available by following this link:

I DO NOT have any stake in any of these companies, only the need of a complete and full solution for personal use.

I'll post more as I play around.
