I cross posted this so that Wavecenter people would see it as well. I tried this with a computer that has a WC-PCI and it works just as well as the Dakota in Win 7

Last night I loaded Mixcraft 5 onto my main Win 7 64 DAW computer. That computer has an RMP HDSP 9652 and an RME Fireface 800 (I usually configure the HDSP for ASIO and the Fireface for WDM). Anyway, after I got Mixcraft 5 installed I noticed that it was defaulting to selecting a random channel pair from the HDSP as the default record and playback sources. Everybody knows that RME has no WaveRT drivers so I thought it wouldn't work. I tried it, and surprise, surprise, it worked! The latencies were respectable, <4ms when playing a softsynth. So, befuddled, I thought, maybe this is a solution for getting multi-track audio accross the studio from my DAW to my multimedia computer that has a Dakota interface (which has been rendered dormant since I upgraded from Vista to Win 7).

So, I installed Mixcraft on the Video computer and sure enough it found the Dakota ADAT ports (as well as the S/PDIF). I configured Mixcraft for recording 16 simultaneous audio tracks and I set SONAR to play 16 channels that I sent via my APACHEs to the Dakota. This worked flawlessly. I then played a stereo track (Mixcraft can only output to 2 channels at any one time) from the multimedia computer, through the Front L&R of the DAW surround monitor setup. It worked that way, also.

So, the point of this is not that everybody should drop their $800 DAW software and run out and buy Mixcraft (about $69), but that all of our old Frontier Design legacy stuff may be made obsolescence free if the DAW people start vigorously supporting WaveRT. I mean, if Mixcraft can do this, so should any other audio software that costs 10x as much.

Also, if you handle audio the way I do, using Mixcraft may provide a solution to using your legacy Frontier Design cards in Win 7.

CS: Hello Wanda and Marcos,

not sure why you would have difficulty using your Wavecenter cards with ASIO apps but we can take a look at it here. I have used Wavecenter with all of the above listed programs. Can you tell us a bit more about your systems, applications, and driver versions?

Have you checked IRQ assignments on your computers? Try moving the Wavecenter to another PCI slot if it is sharing with graphics, networking or another audio device.

Let us know any details you can and we'll try to help.

Regards,

CS
Hello CS, I have tried this on several machines.

Intel 3.2
Intel 925 x motherboard
WinXP SP2.

Also: Intel core2 2.4 E6600
Intel DG965WH Mobo
onboard video
2 gigs 667
WaveCenter is on IRQ22 and shares with no other device.
No other audio devices are turned on in the bios.

I have seen other posts at Plogue and others have this issue.

Please help resolve this.
Thank you
CS: Hello Wanda,

We are in Germany at the Music Messe for the rest of this week. I'll look in to it further when I return.

CS

CS: Hello Wanda,

Yup, we are back, and I am guilty as charged. Totally forgot to check this out when I got back.

So I spent some time playing with this today. It appears to be true that the Wavecenter creates a CPU loading issue. Much more so than even the bigger Dakota card does. This is due to a combination of factors. First, the Wavecenter does more of its processing in the computer's CPU than the larger Dakota does by design (the Wavecenter is an older, less efficient, design).

And secondly, and probably more importantly, Bidule does not appear to offer the user a way to enable only specific hardware channels for use. This is a big deal because unlike WDM audio, the ASIO spec calls for all enabled channels to be active ALL OF THE TIME. Even if they aren't actually playing audio at the time. This means that all 20 Wavecenter channels (10 in + 10 out) are loading the CPU the moment you add it, even if you only have a single VSTi output assigned. Most programs, like SONAR or Cubase allow you to enable only the channels that you are actually using, thus eliminating the problem.

In the next few days we will look to see if there is anything we can do to ease the problem. I just don't know yet if we can do too much.

However, by using the Wavecenter as a Windows Direct device instead of ASIO it seems to work fine.
I've just bought the mixer yesterday and I cannot get it to work them together. I've read both manuals and can't find a solution. And in case I set both devices for playback , do I have to to make changes every time I have to record a vocal track for example? Can I monitor a track from the pc and record a vocal line into at the same time? Please explain me wih details (newbie here :p). Thanx in advance.
CS:Hello Rusty,

I can find very little detailed information on the M10-DX on line however it appears that this mixer has digital output only, and no digital input. Furthermore, the digital output is 2-channel SPDIF only, in either coax or optical form. This means that you can use it a 2-channel input device to the Wavecenter, but it can not directly receive audio coming back from the Wavecenter. In this case the mixer is always going to be the clock master.

Here are the basic steps to syncing up your Wavecenter to the mixer.
1. Connect either a coax or optical cable from the mixer to the Wavecenter Input.
2. Set the mixer to either 44.1 or 48khz sampling rate.
3. Open the Wavecenter control panel and select the clock source as Dig-In SPDIF. In the pull-down menu on the right side (below the "Channels In Use") select Coax or Optical to match the connection you use.
4. The 3 boxes below Signal, FMT, and SLIP should all turn green to indicate that it is receiving a good signal.
5. configure your computer recording software to receive input from the Wavecenter S1:2 (SPDIF channels 1&2).

Those are the basics. Check with your software instructions for details on setting that up. For output you will have to either use another D>A converter, or use the computers built-in audio if it has it.
