Legacy Support

The problem with a great product that never seems to wear out or lose it's usefulness is that it doesn't generate any income after the initial purchase.

I've had my Dakota card for a long time. I've bought two Tangos and my Sierra used.

I wouldn't consider it unreasonable to pay for driver updates for Win 7 64 in particular or and other improvements to the product that may be achievable via software means.

The only weakness in the Dakota product (for me) is the limited number of real time monitoring outputs that can be configured via the Daktray applet. I don't know if that is hardware limited or software limited. Either way, a remedy has value to me and I'd be willing to pay for it.

Would this be something that could be considered?

I posted abiout a year ago on this, exchanged with some of you, solved the problem but can't remember steps... Built a new PC this week and as soon as I get drivers installed for the Dakota, without even actually *using* it (nor launch the Dak tray), I can no longer shut down computer : I get blue screen and reboot - have to shut it down physically...

I now wonder if Dakota was the cause of replacing PC.... (old one had a crashing problem that no one was able to point with certainty - blaming a possible motherboard failure... Well, I don't want to capitulate on this and ... would like to get your solutions first to make it work under Win 7 (64bit). Of course I use last available 64bit drivers (3.15) .

Since I am unsure of the source of problem, I stopped rebuilding software on the machine.

Thanks,

Hello, I'm trying to use my Dakota in a new machine:
Win7 home prem 64bit
MAgix Samlitude Pro 11
Dakota with win7 64bit beta driver

There is no sound at playback. Fwiw windows device manager sees the dakota and says it's working properly. The global output selection section of samplitude only sees the dakota when asio drivers is selected. If MME or WMD is selected then the dakota card cannot be selected. So Iv'e tried both asio 16bit, and asio 24bit with no luck. From within samplitude when I set the track output to what I need (spdif), nothing on the dakota panel changes. It always shows output on optical a1-8. Can't say if there is any signal there. I have no 8 channel converter to plug it in to. I hope this makes sense. Any advice appreciated
Also, never any bsod. the dakota control panel seems to open and close with no problems for the computer. Just no sound

Hello, I have Samplitude 11pro on win7 home prem x64. I have removed a Dakota that I could not get to function without dropouts. I was using the beta for win7 driver. I uninstalled the dakota from device manager and checked "delete drivers". I then removed the dakota card from the machine. Rebooted and setup a new card but Samp still sees Dakota. Is this a situation where drivers are not completely removed? How can I remove all traces? Thanks in advance

Huge problem... «nolonger able to record from S/PDIF - it seems I get no signal. Thgis always worked, but since I switched computer, reinstalled everything, I never had to use it (no mixdown).

I record from all ADAT in and playback through all ADAT out of the Dakota. But when I send stereo out from the mixer through SPDIF to recond mixdown, flat line !

May this have anything to do with the fact I *nver* set anything through Dakota tray on tgis new PC (and... disabled it since it was crashing Windows 7 at shutdown) ??... Don't remember if I had done anything on my old system so to be able to record from S/PDIF... since I *never* touched anuthing back once set.

I use 3.15 on Win 7 x64 - will probably switch to BETA, as I use ASIO not WDM drivers - assuming there won't be an issue with that...

Thanks,

Hello,

I am unable to get audio output from my Dakota.

I have checked and double-checked and still no joy.

I purchased the card used and am now to believe that it is defective.

I have made up a procedure guide for the particular setup that I am using and would appreciate any comments regarding it.

Here it is: Install Guide

If anyone could please tell me if and what I am missing I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you!

Win 7 Mixcraft and WaveRT... Dakota Lives!!!

Last night I loaded Mixcraft 5 onto my main Win 7 64 DAW computer. That computer has an RMP HDSP 9652 and an RME Fireface 800 (I usually configure the HDSP for ASIO and the Fireface for WDM). Anyway, after I got Mixcraft 5 installed I noticed that it was defaulting to selecting a random channel pair from the HDSP as the default record and playback sources. Everybody knows that RME has no WaveRT drivers so I thought it wouldn't work. I tried it, and surprise, surprise, it worked! The latencies were respectable, <4ms when playing a softsynth. So, befuddled, I thought, maybe this is a solution for getting multi-track audio accross the studio from my DAW to my multimedia computer that has a Dakota interface (which has been rendered dormant since I upgraded from Vista to Win 7).

So, I installed Mixcraft on the Video computer and sure enough it found the Dakota ADAT ports (as well as the S/PDIF). I configured Mixcraft for recording 16 simultaneous audio tracks and I set SONAR to play 16 channels that I sent via my APACHEs to the Dakota. This worked flawlessly. I then played a stereo track (Mixcraft can only output to 2 channels at any one time) from the multimedia computer, through the Front L&R of the DAW surround monitor setup. It worked that way, also.

So, the point of this is not that everybody should drop their $800 DAW software and run out and buy Mixcraft (about $69), but that all of our old Frontier Design legacy stuff may be made obsolescence free if the DAW people start vigorously supporting WaveRT. I mean, if Mixcraft can do this, so should any other audio software that costs 10x as much.

Also, if you handle audio the way I do, using Mixcraft may provide a solution to using your legacy Frontier Design cards in Win 7.

Frontier PCI WDM Interface Driver and MIDI error
When Frontier PCI WDM Interface Device is enabled, Mixer Device for MIDI audio output is forced to Dakota S 1:2 and cannot be changed from that setting. Please verify (WinXP) by using Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio Tab -> MIDI Music Playback - > Default Device. The integrated audio on my device is SoundMAX, so I set mine to SoundMAX WDM MIDI. Click on the Volume button for MIDI Music Playback and you will see that the Mixer Device is set to Dakota S 1:2. Select Options -> Properties and change the Mixer device to SoundMAX Digital Audio and press OK to save the change. The Volume control for SoundMAX Digital Audio is displayed. Close the Volume control window and click on the Volume button for MIDI Music Playback again. The Mixer Device is reset back to Dakota S 1:2.
The only way to regain control of MIDI Music Playback is to open Device Manager -> Sound, Video and Game Controllers, and Disable Frontier PCI WDM Interface. With it disabled, the Mixer Device for MIDI Music Playback can be set and saved as desired. The Entry in Device Manager for Dakota PCI Audio Card can stay enabled, it does not appear to be connected to the problem.
This is verified with the Dakota Control Panel -> System Tab -> MIDI Mode set to Disabled(PC full shut down and Power up) or 2x2(PC full shut down and power up again).
Fix this bug in the Frontier PCI WDM Interface Driver please, or let me know where I've gone wrong. As it stands, this audio card cannot Sound Playback and MIDI Music Playback at the same time.

Regards,
Rdaltry
CS:Hello rdaltry,

The symptom you are describing may actually be buried in Windows code rather than the Dakota driver side. Win XP changed how many of the Sound and Audio control panel functions work from earlier versions. The Volume setting for instance, has been completely disabled for any add-on sound cards. However, in most cases these settings will have no affect on how the Dakota (or any other sound card) work with your actual DAW software. They may affect WMP though. But can you tell us what recording software you are using? Perhaps we can give a bit more detail.

CS
I use Sawstudio + Midiworkshop from RML labs for recording and WMP to play many file types. The first problem I'm trying to work through is with WMP. It is playing all files (even MIDI files), but even though I can see the MIDI files play on the progress bar, I can't hear the output. That's what lead me to Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio Tab -> MIDI Music Playback - > Default Device -> Volume button.
I did notice in the Dakota Control Panel -> Clock/Device Status Tab -> Digital Output Status, that Device S 1:2 was linked to Opt A. So I removed that link. The result was that when Frontier PCI WDM Interface Device is enabled, Mixer Device for MIDI audio output is forced to Dakota A 1:2 and cannot be changed from that setting.
I tried the checkbox to Disable S/PDIF in WDM on the Dakota Control Panel System tab. Rebooted the PC, but still the Mixer Device for MIDI audio output is locked to Dakota A 1:2.
I tried Sound and Audio Devices Properties -> Hardware -> Frontier PCI WDM Interface - > Properties - > Properties Tab -> Mixer devices -> Frontier PCI -> Properties, and selected 'Do not use Mixer features on this device' button. It appears that is in someway hardlinked to the same setting on the SoundMAX integrated digital audio device in that, any change made for the Frontier device, forces the same change for the SoundMAX device.
This problem is completely eliminated, and I can again hear the output of WMP when playing MIDI files if I open Device Manager -> Sound, Video and Game Controllers, and Disable Frontier PCI WDM Interface.
If I then re-enable Device Manager -> Sound, Video and Game Controllers -> Frontier PCI WDM Interface, I can hear WMP play MIDI files and actually make use of Dakota. Upon reboot though, all the settings return to thier problem state. This leads me to believe this is fixable without having to wrestle with Device Manager after every power on.

Hi all, I'm new to the forum but I've been using Tangos for a long time. I recently built a new vsti machine and bought a used dakota card to provide I/O. Is there a way to 'zero' the fader and pan settings in the driver 'input mon' section? I can't find any mention of this tab in the manual or anywhere else for that matter. There isn't any numerical feedback in the tab so it's difficult to make settings with a mouse. I appreciate your help in this matter.

x64 Dakota driver crashes windows 7 x64 (RTM)

Hi There,

i have issues with x64 drivers for dakota.

Although it was originally been approved for xp x64 and vista x64, i know most vista drivers work with windows 7 x64.

Also, i could never get the vista x64 driver to work, i always get digital noise (like you would hear in the movie transformers from soundwave :) instead of actual audio sounds from music, etc.

Now with windows 7 x64 (which i was hoping would fix this issue) after the second reboot and from the point on, i get a blue screen at the end of the shutdown.

The message i get:

system_service_exception

no idea how to fix this.

I tried compatibility mode for vista sp2 and "run as administrator" which failed.

Also, for those who don't understand the reasons for x64, you need x64 OS to access ram higher then 3.5GB (limited to 32-bit) - and even if you add the /pae switch (physical address extension) it is still not the same process as running x64 OS when dealing with audio and video.

In my case, i have 8GB of ram running.

Any solution is creately appreciated.

Thx

Matt.
