AlphaTrack and Cakewalk’s SONAR 6

The AlphaTrack controller, from Frontier Design Group, has been designed to make the job of recording and editing audio in SONAR a more efficient and enjoyable process. People who are used to recording on their computers with only a mouse and keypad may find large hardware controllers too daunting to use, or too expensive to purchase. AlphaTrack solves both of those problems. Installing and using AlphaTrack with SONAR is easy and quick. And AlphaTrack won’t cause sticker shock either.

Full Native Mode support of AlphaTrack in SONAR is accomplished through a special control surface file that is included in the driver installer. Checking the box for SONAR support during the Windows driver installation automatically places the necessary control surface file into the Cakewalk folder. For full details on installing AlphaTrack on your PC download the AlphaTrack User’s Guide.

Sonar Native Setup

Once the drivers are installed and AlphaTrack is configured for Native Mode, just open SONAR, enable AlphaTrack under MIDI options, and then select AlphaTrack as a Control Surface. That’s all there is to it.

The Frontier Design Group website includes two documents with information specifically for SONAR users. The first, SONAR Guide contains detailed instructions for configuring AlphaTrack with SONAR, including instructions for setting up the optional user-definable buttons in the AlphaTrack Tools menu. The SONAR Guide also has information about how to use some of AlphaTrack’s advanced features, and a reference chart listing the default controls.

The second file, SONAR Layout, is a single page picture of the AlphaTrack controller with overlaid text summarizing the SONAR feature set. It may be helpful to print this file and have it handy as a quick reference guide.
